Huell Howser to Be Commemorated with Sunset Salute at Griffith Observatory

Two years have passed since Huell Howser's untimely death on January 7, 2013, and fans continue to celebrate the life and career of the TV personality who has become synonymous with "California's Gold."

Like in years past, L.A. City Councilmember Tom LaBonge will organize a sunset salute commemorating Howser this Wednesday at 4 p.m. Event-goers are asked to assemble at the western deck of the Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles by the James Dean statue.

The rotating beacon atop City Hall, which was lit this Christmas season up until Monday, will shine once more on Wednesday to honor the legendary TV host. Howser traced the history of the 1928 Lindbergh Beacon, which was discovered at a city warehouse in the 1990s, in one of the final episode of "Visiting with Huell Howser."

KCET will commemorate the two-year anniversary of Howser's death by re-airing the documentary "A Golden State of Mind: The Storytelling Genius of Huell Howser" on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

His TV shows, including "California's Gold," "Visiting," "Road Trip," "California's Golden Parks," "California's Golden Fairs," "California's Green," "California Missions," and "Palm Springs," air seven nights a week on KCET at 7 p.m.
