Norman Mineta Honored at An American Story: Norman Mineta and His Legacy Screening Event
PBS SoCal hosted a special evening honoring former U.S. Secretary of Transportation to George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Secretary Norman Y. Mineta, with a screening of the documentary Norman Mineta and His Legacy: An American Story on Tuesday, April 23 at the Japanese American National Museum's National Center for the Preservation of Democracy.
Norman Y. Mineta was born in San Jose, California to immigrant parents. Because of their ancestry, the family was incarcerated by the U.S. government during World War II. As a graduate of the University of California, Berkely, he served three years as an Army intelligence officer during the Korean War. In a long and notable career, he became the first Asian American mayor of a major U.S. city (San Jose, California), served 20 years as a distinguished Member of Congress and was the first Asian American Cabinet member serving two U.S. Presidents, a Democrat and Republican. For public service to his country, Mineta was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush.
Norman Mineta and His Legacy: An American Story airs on PBS SoCal on May 20 at 9:00 p.m. and May 25 at 8:00 p.m. as part of our programming dedicated to Asian Pacific month.
