Rethinking The Coast with the Ti'at Society

Season 2 Episode 1

Climate change and urban development have significantly altered ocean conditions and our ability to access the coast, making it more and more difficult for the Tongva tribe to carry on their long-held seafaring traditions. Today, members of the Tongva, Chumash and Acjachemen are rebuilding their connection with the ocean and the Channel Islands by rebuilding a Ti’at, a traditional Tongva canoe. Featured in this episode, which visits Catalina Island and Artesia, Ca. are: Cindi Alvitre, Tongva, co-founder of the Ti’at Society; Heidi Lucero, Acjachemen, an abalone artist;  Valerie Arias, Tongva; Cindi Dorame, Tongva; Craig Torres, Tongva; Lynn Dodd, Ph.D., associate professor, Practice of Religion at the University of Southern California; and Miztlayolxochitl Aguilera, Tongva.
