Climate Change Impacts Measured in Tree Study
Updated April 27, 2016
On Saturday, April 23rd, KCET’s SoCal Connected team joined community volunteers to plant trees at Woodley Park in Van Nuys. The trees are part of a twenty-year study to evaluate the resilience of different species to stressors such as high winds, pests, salinity, drought, and heat.
This event was one of many in a larger urban ecology sustainability plan by the Los Angeles Center for Urban Natural Resources Sustainability. Researchers hope to identify trees that are most effective in improving urban sustainability.
The Center, a project of the USDA Forest Service and the city of Los Angeles, seeks to “enhance the urban forests, urban waterways, urban wildlife, green infrastructure and lives throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area,” according to its website. By studying the city’s current urban environment and its social and environmental impacts, the city also strives to create a healthy, safe and sustainable urban ecosystem for future generations.
