Building the Beloved Community through Song

Candie Carawan, wife of civil rights movement song leader and folk musician Guy Carawan, shares her knowledge and memories of freedom songs, which have evolved from gospel spirituals to labor movement songs to civil rights anthems. Candie and Guy met at the Highlander Folk School in New Market, Tenn., in 1960, and embarked on a life dedicated to social justice fueled by a love of music.
