The Groveland Four
Willis McCall
Willis McCall’s tumultuous 28-year reign as Sheriff of Lake County included many accusations of impropriety. But none was as consequential as his role in the Groveland Four case, in which four young black men were accused of rape by a 17-year-old farm wife. From overseeing brutal beatings of the defendants to shooting two of them, McCall had a hand in almost every twist of the notorious case.
