Students and Teachers from the Golden State Win at 49th Annual California Student Media Festival

49TH ANNUAL CALIFORNIA STUDENT MEDIA FESTIVAL
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (June 8, 2015) – PBS SoCaL, PBS for Greater Los Angeles, announced the winners of The 49th Annual California Student Media Festival at its awards ceremony on Saturday, June 6, 2015. The festival is the nation’s oldest student media festival and exists to celebrate the outstanding media and multimedia projects produced by California’s brightest students and teachers.
This year, a total of 59 awards were presented to 47 elementary and secondary schools from across the Golden State. The awards ceremony brought in over 500 students, parents and teachers to the Harmony Gold Preview House in Hollywood. The event consisted of clips from winning entries and Awards-style acceptance speeches. Highlights from the ceremony will air on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 7 p.m. on PBS SoCaL.
Schools submitted entries in categories such as Fine Arts, Foreign Language, History/Social Science, Mathematics, Special Education, Science and Health, Technical Arts, Thematic, Viral Parody, and more. The types of projects accepted by the festival included Live Action, “Sequential Stills” Movie, Animation, Interactive Stills, Website, and Interactive Multimedia Project.
Grand Prize winning schools were chosen to receive a cash grant for the best overall entry in their respective divisions. The Grand Prize winners included Juniper Elementary School in Escondido for Best Overall Elementary with Drop, Cover and Hold ($1,000) and Deer Valley High School in Antioch for Best Overall Secondary with Last Moments ($1,000).

Since 1967, students from grades K-12 across the state have been submitting original video and multimedia projects on a wide-range of curricular subjects for consideration to the festival, vying for recognition of the educators who serve the festival as its volunteer corps of judges. The Festival strongly encourages project-based learning and meaningful student work in media and multimedia and exists to acknowledge and reward successful classroom work. The Festival believes that:
