Los Angeles, Calif. – June 26, 2023 – PBS SoCal and KCET, Southern California’s flagship PBS stations, announced today an historic awards tally at the 65th Annual Southern California Journalism Awards presented by the Los Angeles Press Club on Sunday. The stations’ 59 nominations and 21 first-place awards were spread across 40 different categories, earning more top honors than any other regional-based broadcast news organization. The wins honored a variety of locally produced series/productions from KCET and PBS SoCal representing content broadcast on-air and published online during the 2022 calendar year. Environmental series EARTH FOCUS and arts & culture series ARTBOUND tied for taking home the most number of awards for the organization with six first-place honors each. Winners were announced in all categories presented during a sold-out gala dinner ceremony attended by hundreds on Sunday, June 25th at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

The locally-produced environmental series EARTH FOCUS in partnership with the Thomson Reuters Foundation examines the social and environmental determinants of health affecting a wide range of populations living in the United States, including the locally-produced episodes “Fighting for Air” and “For the Love of the Land” which each took two honors. The episode “We Are Where We Live” exposes the socio-environmental determinants of health in the city of South Gate, CA through the stories of the patients and doctors of AltaMed and took the award for “Best Feature Documentary.” The award-winning series also took top honors in the “Activism Journalism,” “Investigative,” “Videographer” and “Environmental Reporting” categories.

Tying for top honors was content from ARTBOUND, which in its 13th season featured an installment that looked at the influence of Asian American pop culture magazine Giant Robot which was recognized in both the “Human Interest Feature” and “Animation/Moving Graphic” categories.
