PBS SoCal KOCE Wins Golden Mike Awards for Best Documentary and Best Entertainment Reporting

LOS ANGELES, January 28, 2017 – PBS SoCal KOCE was awarded two Golden Mike Awards® by the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California. Bill W.: The Creative Force Behind Alcoholics Anonymous was recognized for Best Documentary, and LAaRT, PBS SoCal’s weekly arts series, was recognized for Best Entertainment Reporting, both in Division B. The honors were announced at the 67th Annual Golden Mike Awards Presentation Dinner on January 28.

“We are so pleased that our organization’s work continues to be recognized by the Los Angeles creative community,” said Andrew Russell, President and CEO of PBS SoCal. “Southern California is rich with great storytellers with whom we are fortunate to partner to tell these very unique stories.”

The Best Documentary award is given to an individual or group for writing, production, and presentation of a single subject in a program of 30 minutes or more. Bill W.: The Creative Force Behind Alcoholics Anonymous is a documentary film about William G. Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). The film traces his beginnings as an alcoholic on the brink of death, through his recovery, and on to his success forging a path of hope for others to follow. The film first premiered in September of 2016 on PBS SoCal, and was then distributed to public television stations nationally. Bill W.: The Creative Force Behind Alcoholics Anonymous is co-produced by PBS SoCal and Page 124 Productions, LLC. The film is produced and directed by Kevin Hanlon and Dan Carracino; executive produced by Brenda Brkusic; and associate produced by Michelle Merker.

The Best Entertainment Reporting award is given to an individual or team effort on a single entertainment story or series of stories on a single subject. PBS SoCal’s weekly arts series, LAaRT, received the award for the story "KAYPA (Korean American Youth Performing Artists)," which highlights a performance group that uses dance to highlight the beauty and uniqueness of Korean culture . The episode was featured on PBS SoCal’s weekly arts program LAaRT in February of 2016. The segment was produced by Maria Hall Brown, Dwayne Castronova and Heather Guy.

The Golden Mike Awards® are the most prestigious, and most coveted, broadcast journalism prize awarded by the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California to promote excellence in broadcast journalism. The panel of judges consists of first-rate, experienced broadcast news professionals from top markets, stations, networks, bureaus, and universities across the country.
