Los Angles, Calif. – December 2, 2024 – PBS SoCal, Southern California’s flagship PBS station, announced today 9 wins from the National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards presented by the Los Angeles Press Club. With nominations spread across 18 different categories honoring locally produced content from PBS SoCal, winners were announced in all categories presented during a ceremony in downtown Los Angeles at the Millennium Biltmore on Sunday, December 1. PBS SoCal Original arts and culture series ARTBOUND received the most recognition going into the night with 13 nominations and winning in three categories for ARTBOUND documentaries that included “Chinatown Punk Wars” which explored two Chinatown restaurants at the heart of L.A.’s burgeoning punk scene in the 1970s as well as “Angel City Press: L.A. Through the Pages” which examined the impact of the publisher of distinctly high-quality nonfiction books about Southern California. In the “Soft News Feature, Music/Arts/Culture (Over 5 Minutes)” category, the team was also honored for their work “ARTBOUND: Little Amal” which told the story of a 12-ft-tall puppet belonging to a 10-yr-old Syrian refugee.

PBS SoCal’s stand-up comedy documentary series ROOTS OF COMEDY WITH JESUS TREJO received two wins out of its four nominations in the categories “Diversity in the TV/Streaming Industry” and “Documentary or Special Program, Short (Under 30 Minutes).”

One additional win each went to ART HAPPENS HERE WITH JOHN LITHGOW in the “Animation/Moving Graphic” category as well as Taj Frazier in the category of “Anchor/Host” for OUTSIDE THE LYRICS and “Bella” in the category “Documentary or Special Program, Feature, TV/Film Related (Over 30 Minutes).”

An additional win was received by PBS SoCal’s Senior Producer of Arts & Culture Nic Cha Kim for “Broadcast Journalist of the Year.” His previous honors include winning this award from the LA Press Club SoCal Journalism Awards in 2018.
