PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST

First Place Winners Advance to the National PBS KIDS Writers Contest

COSTA MESA, Calif. (May 26, 2015)PBS SoCaL, PBS for Greater Los Angeles, has announced the local winners of the annual PBS KIDS Writers Contest. The annual contest is a national initiative designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, active learning. The PBS KIDS Writers Contest encourages children in grades K-5 to celebrate creativity and build literacy skills by writing and illustrating their own stories.

This year’s local winners are:

1st Place - Kindergarten: “Fuzzy and Acorn” by Nadya Jisun Kim of Buena Park, Calif.

1st Place - First Grade: “Friends on the Moon” by Jishnu Mukherjee of Woodland Hills, Calif.

1st Place - Second Grade: “Up On Stage and Not Afraid” by Srishti Pradhan of Tustin, Calif.

1st Place - Third Grade: “The Hatching Egg” by Aaliyah Lavender of Lancaster, Calif.

1st Place - Fourth Grade: “Tooth Fairy” by Jude Alexis of Irvine, Calif.

1st Place – Fifth Grade: “Caramel” by Nicole Nguyen of Westminster, Calif.

2nd Place - Kindergarten: “Declan's Treasure” by Alex Gordon of Burbank, Calif.

2nd Place - First Grade: “The Adventures of Kitty and Piggy” by Olivia Smits Van Overhagen of Victorville, Calif.

2nd Place - Second Grade: “Why Arctic Wolves Are White” by Isabella Duncan of Pasadena, Calif.

2nd Place - Third Grade: “Max and the BookMan” by Maximus Keegan of Fountain Valley, Calif.

3rd Place - Kindergarten: “The Easter Egg” by Sydney Rubio of Huntington Beach, Calif.

3rd Place - First Grade: “The Big Game” by Jake Susank of Costa Mesa, Calif.

3rd Place - Second Grade: “The Skunk That Smelled Like Cupcakes” by Gidget Keller of Studio City, Calif.

3rd Place -Third Grade: “Ali's Lucky Skates” by Danielle Tsai of San Gabriel, Calif.

Winners have been invited to a special ceremony at the PBS SoCaL studio on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 where they will be awarded certificates and prizes for their writing efforts. PBS SoCaL’s first place winners will be entered into the national contest where a panel of esteemed judges will rank the top 12 entries.  National winners will be announced this summer, and the winning stories will be featured on pbskids.org/writerscontest.
