Arts & Culture Community Events Calendar
To complement the new digital initiative, PBS SoCal is also connecting people to the arts with a new community calendar featuring free and low-cost arts and culture events in Southern California. The calendar highlights public events across the region that range from live performances and museum exhibits to local cultural festivals. For more details and to submit your own community events for consideration, visit pbssocal.org/ArtsCalendar.

Interactive Digital Content
Also new to the PBS SoCal digital experience is an interactive visual novel that accompanies the most recent season of PBS SoCal’s award-winning, locally-produced environmental series EARTH FOCUS. Inspired by the episode "The Tortoise, the Raven and Us," the Desert Biology Internship Simulator has digital audiences step into the shoes of a summer intern for the Mojave Desert. With mini games and hand drawn art, the story has players join a team of California desert stewards to discover why the Ravens are invading the fictional town of Raya Verde. Players will explore how biologists are rethinking solutions to a decades-long problem and learn actions to help humans and wildlife live together. Serving as a valuable learning tool, the game has players tackle real challenges facing desert communities and emphasizes how young learners can contribute to local conservation efforts and be an environmental steward. The new game suitable for ages 10 and up can be accessed at pbssocal.org/shows/earth-focus/games/desert-biology.

For younger audiences, PBS SoCal continues to provide a diverse range of educational resources designed to engage Southern California families with fun-filled digital learning activities. As a part of the FAMILY MATH initiative, these resources aim to help families and caregivers prepare children ages 2-5 years old for kindergarten and beyond through meaningful math experiences. Six bilingual digital games from the creators at Makefully Studios are now available at pbssocal.org/familymath. Titles include “Pattern Parade,” “Hungry Papa,” “Measure and Toss,” “House Hunt,” “Shape Puzzles” and “Build a Picture” to coincide with each of FAMILY MATH’s core foundations: counting, sorting, patterns, measurement, shapes and spatial sense. The games are aimed to foster a co-playing format for families with customization features that allow parents to tailor the games to their child. Having launched earlier this year, the games have thus far received nearly 3,500 views.
