Minerva Canto is a freelance journalist in Southern California who specializes in reporting on social issues. She writes a bimonthly column for the Los Angeles-based Capital & Main investigating the intersection of health, race and wealth. A native of Mexico City, she grew up in Santa Ana, California and worked as a daily news reporter for The Associated Press in Los Angeles and San Diego, and newspapers in various states covering immigration, U.S.-Mexico issues, police, courts, and the arts. She has received awards for her reporting on victims of violence and reporting in Latin America.

On Wednesday, the Santa Ana City Council approved a General Plan Update that addresses lead contamination and other land use issues that disproportionately affect marginalized communities. A law called SB1000 has been key in helping community advocates lobby city officials to incorporate environmental justice into land use planning in order to reduce health risks.
