Michael Joyce
In the early 1990's The New York Times called Michael Joyce's novel "afternoon" "the granddaddy of hypertext fictions." "afternoon" has since been anthologized in "Postmodern American Fiction: A Norton Anthology" and translated into various languages. A French translation will be published by Editions HYX (Orléans) in 2013. Other hypertext fictions include "On the Birthday of the Stranger" in the inaugural edition of Evergreen Review online, as well as "Twilight," "A Symphony," and "Twelve Blue." most recent print novel, "Disappearance," was published by Steerage Press in October 2012, with two novels, "Going the Distance" (SUNY Excelsior editions) -- the first appearance in print of his 1994 online e-book -- and "Foucault, in Winter, in the Linnaeus Garden" (Starcherone) to follow in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Other novels include "Was: Annales Nomadique," published by Fiction Collective2 in 2007, and Liam's Going, reissued in paperback by McPherson and Co. in 2009. His first novel, "The War Outside Ireland," won the Great Lakes New Writers Award. In recent years he has taken more and more to poetry, with poems and translations published in various journals and a book-length sequence of poems, "Paris Views," published by BlazeVOX in 2012. His collaborative work with Alexandra Grant includes "Lost Hills Hokku" (2009), text for her one-woman show, Bodies, at Honor Fraser Gallery (2010); and "The Ladder Series" (2007), text for her one-woman show, at LA MOCA. With Maria Engberg, and Jay David Bolter he is currently developing "The Surface of Water: Worlds of Anders Zorn," an Augmented Reality blended panoramic narrative, created for mobile AR (smart phone or tablet). An earlier augmented reality fiction text, "Joyce in Berlin," for "Osmotic Minds: Berlin Alexanderplatz 5.0," by Stefan Schemat, Hilmar Schmundt, Michael Joyce, and Isabella Bordoni won Honorable Mention at Ars Electronica in 1999. Joyce lives along the Hudson River near Poughkeepsie where he is Professor of English and Media Studies at Vassar College.
