Denise A. Herd, University of California, Berkeley

Denise Herd is a Professor of Public Health at UC Berkeley and a contributor to The Conversation. Herd's scholarship centers on racialized disparities in health outcomes, spanning topics as varied as images of drugs and violence in rap music, drinking and drug use patterns, social movements and the impact of corporate targeting and marketing on popular culture among African American youth. In addition to her extensive scholarship in public health, Herd has also served as associate dean at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health for seven years.

As the video goes public of Black police officers in Memphis beating Tyre Nichols to death, it is a stark reminder of George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020. The health effects of these killings ripple from the individual victim to their families, local communities and Black Americans far from the site of the killing, who may have never met the victim.
