Go Scuba Diving at Channel Islands National Park Without Leaving the Computer

Happy World Oceans Day! Unofficially celebrated every year on June 8th, the day is geared toward raising awareness about the ocean and what it provides for the world. With 840 miles of coastline, Californians are no stranger to the Pacific, but one of the most unique features are the Channel Islands.

Eight in total off the coast of Southern California, five make up Channel Islands National Park. While the park is free to visit, a boat ride over is not, nor are trips scheduled frequently, as with the populated Catalina Island.

So one solution park officials have come up with to whet local students' curiosity is the live dive program in partnership with the Ventura County Office of Education. Park rangers and divers broadcast live video from Anacapa Island to classrooms, teaching curriculum-based materials with real-world application and interaction with students on the mainland.

Now the program is going to be brought to the public. In a special event today, you can become an honorary park visitor by tuning in via their live programs webpage at noon and 2 p.m.

And if you miss it, not to worry, starting next week through Labor Day, there will be live dives every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by a new live hike program at 2 p.m. If that's not enough, you can book a boat trip out to the island to be there for the live filming.
