Indian Canyons Outside Palm Springs to Reopen

The popular hiking trails at Indian Canyons in the Coachella Valley are reopening after an eventful summer of fire and flooding, officials with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians announced today. The destination of over 60 miles of trails on reservation land will open to the on Monday, November 18 at 8 a.m.

"Repairs to our roads and trails are nearly complete," Tribal Chairman Jeff L. Grubbe said in a statement. "We are pleased to be able to re-open this beautiful area to the public before the holidays."

Indian Canyons, which costs up to $9 per person to enter, temporarily closed in July after the Mountain Fire burned 6,000 acres of the tribe's reservation land. Then in early September, a summer storm created flash flood conditions, causing considerable damage. Trees and boulders were downed, mud overtook roads, and access was cut off.

Tahquitz Canyon, another destination owned by the tribe three miles away, also closed in September, but reopened days later.
