'Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain' Tells the Story of a Life Well-Lived at the Virtual KCET Cinema Series on July 15
Q&A immediately following with director Morgan Neville.
As anyone with a dog-eared copy of "Kitchen Confidential" can attest, Bourdain’s unmistakable voice is that of an old friend and fellow traveler. In this film, viewers are served an intimate and unflinching look at how an anonymous chef became a world-renowned cultural icon. Chef, writer, adventurer, provocateur: Anthony Bourdain lived his life unabashedly. From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville ("20 Feet From Stardom," "Won’t You Be My Neighbor?"), this new documentary is a portrait of a complex, contradictory and charismatic man that reverberates with his presence, in his own voice and in the way he indelibly impacted the world around him.
"In the beginning I wasn’t sure what the film was going to be about," Neville says. "I only knew I wanted to celebrate the joy and excitement and humor of the man. But I soon found the story I wanted to tell was how a hard-living, irreverent chef at a mediocre New York restaurant suddenly shot to fame at the age of 44 and what happened after that. Not many people in their mid-40s suddenly go from utter obscurity to absolute fame… I might have just thought, well, here’s an interesting guy. Instead I was able to understand a bit more about what he meant to people in that world and how long and far his journey went."
Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A with director Morgan Neville.
The film screens on Thursday, July 15 at 7 p.m. PDT. Only $10 per viewing link. Limited space available.
