Reneé Zellweger Transforms into 'Judy' Garland at the Fall KCET Cinema Series on September 17
Q&A immediately following star Reneé Zellweger.
Thirty years after starring in "The Wizard of Oz," legendary actress and singer Judy Garland (Academy Award-winner Reneé Zellweger) arrives in London the winter of 1968, performing a five-week run of sold-out shows at the Talk of the Town nightclub. If her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. A passionate woman who has already had four husbands, Garland begins a whirlwind romance with musician Mickey Deans. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love and the sheer glamour of "the world's greatest entertainer." Jessie Buckley, Michael Gambon, Rufus Sewell and Finn Wittrock also star.
Zellweger does her own singing in the movie and engrossed herself in Garland’s catalog of work for hours of research prior to her onscreen performances. “Because I wanted to understand the evolution and I wanted to understand how it started, where it went and what that looked like,” she said. “For Judy, it was always about being able to connect with the songs and the feeling.”
The film screens at 7:00 p.m. at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A immediately following. “Judy” will be released in theatres on September 27, 2019.
