Audio Q&A for September 15, 2015: "The Intern" With Writer and Director Nancy Meyers
The Intern, an intelligent and thoughtful comedy, proved to be a definite crowd pleaser with the KCET Cinema Series' audience on Tuesday night at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.. Academy Award®-winners Robert De Niro (Raging Bull, Silver Linings Playbook) and Anne Hathaway (Les Mise?rables, The Devil Wears Prada) and seasoned actress Rene Russo (Thor, Ransom, Nightcrawler) star in the film, which is directed and written by Oscar-nominated and award-winning filmmaker Nancy Meyers (It's Complicated, Something's Gotta Give, Private Benjamin). A lively conversation with Nancy Meyers and KCET Cinema Series host/film expert Pete Hammond followed the screening.
In The Intern, Ben Whittaker (De Niro), a 70-year-old widower, discovers that retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway).
Hammond and Meyers discussed the origin of the story, writing a script with specific actors such as Robert De Niro and Rene Russo in mind, the New York Times' baby-boomers column titled "Booming," the world of start-ups, women entrepreneurs and forgiveness in relationships.
