Los Angeles Marches Against Monsanto
Hundreds gathered in the streets of Koreatown on Saturday to participate in the second March Against Monsanto (MAM) demonstration in Los Angeles this year. The event was organized by John Landeros, a 24-year-old resident of West Covina, and featured eight other speakers talking about the effects of GMOs on human health, and its consequences for the planet. Among the many passionate attendees of all ages and backgrounds, there were many families that showed up in full anti-GMO garb, complete with both hand drawn posters of all shapes and sizes. The demonstrators started in the middle of the street on Wilshire Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, chaperoned by the police who closed the streets for them. The bilingual chants used during the march ranged from "hey, hey, ho, ho, GMOs have got to go" to "Monsanto, escucha, estamos en la lucha." The peaceful group marched and chanted their way east to their destination of MacArthur Park's Levitt Pavilion, where the organizers had a series of gardening workshops with non-GMO seeds available free to the public.
