The Best of '¡Ahora!'
On September 1, 1969, the groundbreaking Mexican American community talk/magazine program, "¡Ahora!" premiered on KCET. Co-host Jesus Treviño on the program:
The purpose of this series is to explore the history, the culture, the artistic achievements, and intellectual thought of our people, La Raza. Our historical presence in the development of this country has been denied. We at "¡Ahora!" affirm our identity as a people unique in world history. The empires of our forefathers stretch throughout the Americas long before the first European immigrants came to Veracruz or Plymouth Rock.Through our veins runs the blood of our Spanish father and our Indian mother. We are a new people. We are La Raza. This is our history. The history of the early Indian civilizations. The history of Mexico. The history of La Raza in the United States.
"¡Ahora!" ran for 175 episodes, ending in May, 1970. This "best of" compilation includes ritual Aztec dance, musical acts, historical reenactments, conversations on traditional Mexican art, examples of contemporary Chicano art, and profound moments in community activism and community involvement.
