This VR Project Preserves Kumeyaay Traditions in San Diego
With the use of geolocation, augmented reality, and virtual reality, OurWorlds transforms locations across the country into immersive environments that amplify Native American stories, people and culture. In San Diego, OurWorlds collaborated with members of the Kumeyaay community to present important traditions and stories of Kumeyaay maritime culture. With the OurWorlds mobile app, users can visit La Jolla Shores and virtually project the landscape with Kumeyaay words, narrated stories from Kumeyaay educator and community leader Stan Rodriguez, and imagery of ancient, handwoven tule boats on the water. Hear more about the app from OurWorlds Founders Kilma Lattin (former Exectutive Committee Member of the Pala Band of Mission Indians) and Catherine Eng. And learn about the cultural education work of Kumeyaay community leader Stan Rodriguez both on and off the app.
An exhibition featuring their work, "Beyond the Metaverse with OurWorlds: Indigineous Stories are All Around You" is on view at Gallery QI at UC San Diego until March 17, 2023.
